Neurofeedback
Unlock your brain’s potential
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a non-drug, reward-based training system for your brain.
The brain needs healthy fast- and slow-moving brainwave activity to function at its best. Neurofeedback, a form of biofeedback, works to change the electrical activity of your brain. It’s a non-invasive treatment that works toward changing the source of your unwanted symptoms.
What does Neurofeedback help with?
Neurofeedback is used to treat many conditions such as:
- ADHD and ADD
- Stress disorders
- Anxiety
- Panic attacks
- Addictions
- Mood disorders
- Asperger’s
- Depression
- Headaches
- Migraines
- Concussions
- Memory concerns
- Sleep issues
- Eating disorders
Neurofeedback is exercise for the brain!
Neurofeedback, also called EEG Biofeedback is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive, drugless method for teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthful way.
During normal daily activities such as balancing our accounts or following directions in class, certain areas of our brain will need to be active and using the faster frequency called Beta. On the other hand, if after a long day we wish to relax and wind down, a different part of the brain will need to be activated using the slower brainwave frequency called Alpha. The goal of Neurofeedback is to improve the brain’s ability to self-regulate, maintain flexibility, and smoothly shift between states of relaxation and arousal.
We can also help to maintain good brain function as people get older. The good news is that almost any brain, regardless of its level of function, can be trained to function better.
Behaviour
While medication and behavioural interventions can do a good job treating the symptoms of children with ADD or ADHD, neurofeedback retrains the brain to regain better control and focus. This method is about building up the person, focused on the qualities they possess.
Stress and Anxiety
Anxiety is a common response to stress, and sufferers often feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and fatigued. Neurofeedback can help guide your brain to change how it responds to stimuli that disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium.
Peak Performance
Concentration, focus and emotional control are key to achieving optimal performance in all fields. Athletes and business executives are taking advantage of neurofeedback technologies to learn how to utilize the full potential of their minds to reach their peak. Many individuals experience supplemental benefits to neurofeedback training, like improved sleep quality, less anxiety, greater ability to adapt and tackle daily challenges.
Neurofeedback at Hearing & Health
Most of our neurofeedback programs begin with a comprehensive assessment. This includes standard checklists and forms, but we also include Heart Rate Variability testing, and a mini-QEEG brain map.
This brain map looks at the brain’s electrical activity and guides your neurofeedback program based on your unique brain. No two clients have quite the same protocols. In order to get the most out of your training, we customize your program to fit your specific needs.
A dysregulated brain tends to be over-stimulated when it is supposed to be calm and under-stimulated when it is supposed to be attentive. Sometimes, the brain self-corrects. When it doesn’t, this dysregulation becomes “the new normal”. With neurofeedback we can re-train the brain to function optimally, the way it was designed. When your brain is better regulated, it gives you the freedom to change behaviours and thoughts.
What happens in a Neurofeedback session?
The Neurofeedback Practitioner will complete a thorough assessment with you and may have you fill out a survey listing your complaints and/or challenges that have brought you into the office. You will next be placed in a quiet space, in a comfortable, reclining chair. The trainer will attach special sensors to your head that will feed your brain wave patterns into the Infinity program’s software.
A neurofeedback training session is relaxing, enjoyable and typically lasts about 30 minutes. As the session starts, you will see an image on the screen. The image will respond to certain brainwaves that you produce. Music, or a tone, will be heard and the image will move e.g. a ball will roll and hit a target if you are on the Pinball screen. If your attention drifts, the moving image will stop moving and the sound disappear till you again produce the required brainwaves. This instantaneous feedback teaches the brain which brainwaves much be produced for optimal functioning. This will “reset” the brain and optimize itself.
At the end of a session, you will most likely feel less stressed and more mentally clear. Many users experience deeper sleep and dreams after their very first session.
How does it work?
The Thought Technology Infinity neurofeedback system is a highly personalized brain training software that prompts the central nervous system to help make the best use of your brain’s neural resources.
Much like a mirror that promotes self-correction, the Infinity neurofeedback program monitors your brain waves and then provides “feedback” to your central nervous system about what it has just done. When the software detects a tremor in your brain wave pattern, it sends an audible signal that encourages the brain to “reset” and self-correct.
Neurofeedback training for the brain is similar to physical training for the body. Much of our suffering comes from pervasive recurring thoughts and feelings in which our minds become emotionally stranded or cognitively “stuck”. Neurofeedback prompts the brain to draw from its existing resources and pull itself out of these mental “ruts”. The result is a more open and positive mindset in which obstacles are more manageable and problems more resolvable.
